Keri Caves & Turtle Island by Boat

The south of Zakynthos (Zante) is where crystal-clear water, dramatic sea caves and rare wildlife come together. From Zakynthos Marina you cruise past the Keri Caves and the towering Mizithres rocks near Cape Keri, then glide into Laganas Bay, a protected National Marine Park and the nesting home of the loggerhead sea turtle, Caretta caretta. At its heart lies Marathonisi, better known as Turtle Island. Sheltered and calm, this is our most family-friendly route, on your own self-drive boat or with a private skipper.

Sea caves and clear blue water at Cape Keri in the south of Zakynthos

WHAT YOU'LL SEE

The Keri Caves & Mizithres Rocks

Anchor beneath the white cliffs of Cape Keri and slip into a maze of sea caves, arches and grottoes carved into the rock, where the water glows a deep, luminous blue. Just offshore rise the Mizithres, two striking rock pinnacles that are among the most photographed sights in the south. The bays here are sheltered and shallow, ideal for a relaxed swim and snorkel stop before you continue toward Turtle Island.

TURTLE ISLAND & LAGANAS BAY

Turtle Island (Marathonisi) & the Marine Park

Laganas Bay is a protected National Marine Park and one of the most important breeding grounds in the Mediterranean for the loggerhead turtle, Caretta caretta. As you cruise its calm, shallow waters there is a real chance to see sea turtles swimming in the wild, though, as a protected area, sightings are never guaranteed and we keep a respectful distance. At the centre of the bay floats Marathonisi, or Turtle Island, ringed by pale sand and turquoise shallows. The run south from Zakynthos Marina is short, about 20–40 minutes, and sheltered, making it perfect for families. No boat licence is required for our self-drive speedboats, and every trip starts with a short safety briefing.

Keri Caves & Turtle Island Tour, FAQ

Will we see sea turtles on the tour?

Laganas Bay is a protected marine park and home to the loggerhead turtle (Caretta caretta), so there is a good chance to see them in the wild. Turtles are wild animals, so we cannot guarantee sightings, and we always keep a respectful distance.

Is this tour good for families and children?

Yes, this is our calmest, most sheltered route. The short run south and the shallow, protected waters of Laganas Bay make it ideal for families with children.

How long does it take to reach the area by boat?

Only about 20–40 minutes south from Zakynthos Marina, depending on the boat and sea conditions, much shorter than the northern routes.
