Navagio Beach is the most photographed spot in Zakynthos, and there is only one way to get there: by boat. The beach sits at the bottom of a sheer limestone cliff on the northwest coast of the island, completely cut off from land. No road leads to it, no path winds down to it. If you want to stand on that white sand next to the rusted shipwreck and look up at those towering white walls, you need to be on the water. Combining Navagio with the Blue Caves in a single trip makes for one of the best half-day routes the island has to offer.
Navagio Beach: What to Expect
The shipwreck
The MV Panagiotis ran aground on this beach in 1980 after reportedly smuggling contraband. It has been rusting on the sand ever since, and over the decades it has become one of the most iconic images in all of Greece. Up close, the scale of it is striking. The hull towers above the beach, and the contrast between the orange rust, the white sand, and the electric blue of the water is something that photographs rarely do justice to.
The cliffs and the water
The cliffs that surround Navagio rise to around 200 metres on either side. The water inside the cove is shallow near the shore and shifts through every shade of turquoise and blue as it deepens. It is calm, clear, and one of the best places to swim on the entire island.
What to keep in mind
- Navagio is exposed to open sea swells from the northwest. On rough days, the entrance to the cove can be choppy.
- The beach gets very busy in peak season, especially between 11am and 2pm when tour boats arrive in numbers. Arriving early or later in the afternoon makes a significant difference.
- There are no facilities on the beach. No toilets, no bars, no shade structures. Bring everything you need with you.
The Blue Caves: What to Expect
The Blue Caves are located at Cape Skinari, at the northernmost tip of Zakynthos, a short sail from Navagio. They are a series of sea caves carved into the base of the cliffs by centuries of wave action.
The light inside the caves
The reason people come here is the colour of the water. Sunlight enters the caves from below the surface and reflects off the white rocky seafloor, turning the water an intense, almost electric shade of blue. The effect is most dramatic in the morning when the sun is at the right angle.
Swimming inside the caves
You can anchor just outside and swim in, or manoeuvre a small boat carefully through the wider cave openings. The water is crystal clear with excellent visibility, making it a fantastic snorkelling spot as well.
Best time to visit
Morning light produces the most vivid blue reflections. If your route allows it, aim to reach the Blue Caves before midday for the full effect.
